The Bar or Bat Mitzvah is a milestone in the life of a child. It is the culmination of years of hard work and preparation, and provides a wonderful opportunity for the entire family to bond and connect to each other as they connect to tradition. At Park East Synagogue, a Bar or Bat Mitzvah provides an opportunity to celebrate this momentous occasion in an environment that is warm and welcoming. At Park East the child is the focus of the service and in the traditional services we incorporate English readings.
In preparation for their Bar Mitzvah, boys study with Rabbi Harold Einsidler, who teaches them to chant their Torah portion and Haftarah, and to participate along with the Cantor in the synagogue service. Our rabbis also help every boy prepare a speech, which is delivered to the congregation during the service.
Park East conducts a special service for the celebration of a Bat Mitzvah by a girl who has turned twelve years of age. Bat Mitzvah students are also taught to read a Haftarah and lead special selections from the prayers. During the Bat Mitzvah ceremony, she will chant her Haftarah and lead these prayers, and will also deliver a speech to all assembled.
